Japanese restaurants and vegetarian restaurants are common in Penang. However, there are not many places in Penang that combine these two options together. One of the places that serves this unique combination is no other than Sushi Kitchen.
Sushi Kitchen is not facing the main road directly, therefore for those that need to locate this place will face some challenge. If you are driving from Relau to Sungai Ara via Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, you will surely pass by Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Ara on your left. Keep driving for about 5 meters, you will see a right junction to Jalan Sungai Ara 1, turn into this road and keep driving for another 5 meters, turn to your left and you will see Sushi Kitchen is just around the corner.
Sushi Kitchen is located on the second floor. In order to go up to the restaurant, you will need to press the door bell and place your shoes on the rack before you go in to the restaurant.
In the restaurant, although the built-up area is not very big the surrounding made us felt very cozy and welcoming. There are two types of dining style. One of it is the Japanese “tatami” style where all the diners are seated on the floor supported by cushions.
Another is with the proper dining tables where you can have a proper seat but they are very limited.
The interior of the restaurant has been decorated with several antique equipment. One of it is an antique fridge that welcomes vegans to the restaurant.
Another is an old TV with a paper advertisement on job opportunities in the restaurant.
A giant teddy as big as a child could be found on the tatami seating area
The restaurant is also surrounded by plants. The owner must be a nature lover.
Some antique tea cups were seen hanging as decoration.
There was a fitness challenge in the restaurant. For those who were able to pull chin-up with the strength of finger grip for more than 19 times, you will get a free meal.
On the menu of Sushi Kitchen, there are some interesting keys to the menu guide. One of it that caught my attention was the flight symbol which is for those who are in a hurry and looking for a quick and simple meal.
The food here is known to be wholesome as they have been prepared without MSG, Artificial Coloring and preservatives, etc.
Japanese Green Tea – RM2.00, refillable.
Hapiness Couple – RM18.80, the set came with 8 pieces of sushi catered for couples.
Each of the sushi had its own unique taste and was fully vegetarian.
G-Ken Floss Fried Rice – RM9.80, sounds like chicken floss fried rice but it was actual fried rice with G-Ken floss made from mushrooms. Other than G-ken floss, it contained plenty of greens such as lettuce.
The so-called “G-ken” floss really gave the feeling like chicken floss. Overall, the taste of fried rice was very nice. This dish is suitable for kids as well as it is not spicy.
Organic Chilli Padi Fried Rice – RM7.80, the fried rice was packed with chopped chili padi. It was then sprinkle with some G-ken floss too.
The spiciness of the chili padi can be adjusted upon request. For those that love spicy yet unable to take too spicy food, you can always request for less spicy. The taste of this dish was mainly spicy with a tad of saltiness from the G-Ken floss.
California Roll, this is a complementary dish from the Chef, perhaps due to our long wait. It was stuffed with sushi rice, carrot strips, romaine lettuce, cucumber, eggless mayo and G-ken floss.
The texture of the California roll was very crispy and appetizing.
Overall, the food here is acceptable and the price here is also very resonable. Again, the drawback will be the car park availability on the surrounding and also the small and cozy area will be very pack when it’s lunch and dinner time. Also, the place serves food which are suitable during Nine-Emperor God Festival too.
