Sangkaya Cafe Icon City

To most people Sangkaya is just a normal coconut ice cream kiosk found in major shopping malls. Most people will just purchase the ice cream which comes in cups or coconut shells. Following the cafe trend, Sangkaya has recently opened a cafe which offers more than the usual coconut ice cream.

Sangkaya has chosen the bustling Icon City at Bukit Mertajam as the place for its latest cafe. It is a double-storey open concept cafe with a comfortable seating arrangement for a relaxing ambience. This is the only outlet in Penang that provides a complete listing of Sangkaya’s desserts.

It was so cozy to be in the cafe to enjoy the wide range of Sangkaya desserts. There is even a tatami area where diners can casually sit on the floor.

There is also a semi-private area on the first floor where is it more private and quiet compared to ground floor.

Affogato – RM10.30, the single shot espresso was served together with coconut ice cream, topped with some fresh cream, some coconut meat slices and a charcoal cone.

Apparently I am not a fan of coconut flavoured products especially when mixed with coffee, it just doesn’t taste right for me. However, this affogato changed my perception. Perhaps in this case pure coconut ice cream was used instead of coconut flavoured products. The taste of the espresso with pure coconut ice cream tasted exceptionally good.

Chendol – RM10.90, Sangkaya’s version of chendol is mostly similar than any other regular chendols in Penang. The ingredients included jelly, green chendol, sweet corn, peanuts, syrup and gula melaka. The only difference is the use of coconut ice cream instead of coconut milk.

The replacement of coconut milk with coconut ice cream made an otherwise regular chendol more aromatic and rich in taste. Moreover, Sangkaya’s chendol does not have the usual ice pieces. Fresh corns are used without the cream and the green chendol has a natural green shade instead of the usual bright green. This is a healthier version of chendol.

Fresh Baked Waffle – RM12.90, freshly baked waffles were topped with chocolate syrup and selected option of ice cream.

The cold ice cream was a contrast to the hot waffles. The hot and crunchy waffles mixed well with the cold and chilling ice cream.

Malaysian Toast – RM6.90, the ice cream is served with salted butter and covered with toasts.

This is similar to the fried ice cream that we always had. But instead of bun it has been replaced with toasts. The bite texture of this dish is similar to waffles and ice cream. This dish is best to be taken while the toast is hot.

Best Giler!! – RM17.90, the 2 selection of ice cream flavours served with 2 cones.

This dish is similar to having 2 ice cream cones but plated in a nicer way. The highlight of this dessert is the teh tarik flavored ice cream and pineapple ice cream which are both very unique in taste.

Molten Cake with Salted Egg – RM12.90, there are 2 flavours to be chosen from: green tea or black sesame. The cake is then topped with ice cream.

The green tea and salted egg molten cake was packed with green tea taste. The molten cake was supposed to have the green tea lava oozing out when the cake was sliced. However, it really depends on your luck as not every time you will get the lava texture.

The black sesame molten cake had a nice aromatic smell of sesame and it blended well with the salted egg and the ice cream.

Teh 3 Lapis – RM8.40, the tea was mixed with a touch coconut milk and gula melaka. This drink is so Malaysian and it tasted refreshing.

Coconut Shake – RM9.90, This is the coconut version of our usual milk shake. This drink tasted creamy with full of coconut flavour.

There are many other desserts available and you may refer to the menu below:

Overall, this is the place if you are nuts about coconuts. It is also a good alternative place for us to hangout with family and friends when looking for places for desserts or chillax. The taste of the food here was good and overall the desserts were not too sweet. The drawback of this place is the difficulty to find a place for parking especially during weekends and public holidays.
