There are many cafes in Penang in the vicinity of Georgetown. However, only a handful of them start operating before 9am. I am not sure is it because most of the Penangites like to wake up late during weekend or it is just a trend of the cafes in Penang?
One of the cafes that serve breakfast before 9am is Pit Stop Cafe. There are 2 outlets, the first is at China Street and the other one is located at Lorong Chulia. The one that I visited was the Lorong Chulia outlet.
The name of this cafe previously was known as Tong Kong. Which as a very old and classic type of coffee shop.
Since it was taken over by Pit Stop, the place underwent a minor facelift and revamped it to a contemporary cafe but it is evident that many of the classical elements still remained the same.
Morning Starter – RM13.80, this breakfast set consisted of 2 slices of bread, a hash brown, slices of bacon, scrambled egg, a sunny side up egg and some greens.
This is a great kick-start breakfast which had everything you need to start your day. I would say the price of this breakfast is considered reasonable for a cafe.
Roast Chicken & Cheese Sandwich – RM13.80, the sandwich was stuffed with roast chicken slices, topped with melting cheddar cheese, some potato wedges and greens.
The taste of the roast chicken was packed with turmeric and spices aroma with some mayonnaise. This is a fusion dish which suited local tastebuds.
For any purchase of breakfast, sandwiches or pancakes, with an additional of RM3.50, you can get a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
If you are looking for gourmet coffee such as hot latte – RM9.50, unfortunately you have to pay full price for it. It was very nice to see the lovely greeting on the hot latte in the early morning, however I personally do not prefer the addition of chocolate syrup which had sweetened the latte. It would be perfect if it was drawn with pure espresso or milk foam.
Overall, this is one of the few cafes that open early in the morning. The taste of the food was acceptable and normal, the price of the food was affordable compared to cafe other cafes. The only drawback is the parking lots are limited.
