To a typical Asian, an Australian cuisine usually gives the impression of nothing significant but another western cuisine. However, to me Australian cuisine is very much different from a typical Western cuisine. The food in Australian restaurants is usually healthy and balanced.
No doubt there are not many Australian Restaurants in Penang for us to have an in-depth experience with Australian cuisine. Those restaurants that serve healthy and balanced food are only a handful. Today, one of the restaurants that I am going to introduce is Oz Restaurant.
Oz restaurant is located at Elite Avenue. If you are driving from town area towards Bayan Baru, there is a very high chance that you will be using Jalan Dr. Tun Awang. If you are on this road, you will see a junction that will lead to Jalan Tengah. Turn left to Jalan Tengah, keep driving until the second left junction. You will need to turn into Persiaran Matsuri, turn the first right turn to Jalan Mayang Pasir 3 and you will see Elite Avenue is on your left.
One thing worth to highlight about this place is the set lunch here only cost RM14.50 while the dinner here is RM24.50 per set. Oz Restaurant is not charging GST on the bill.
Upon entering this restaurant, you will notice that the surrounding design of this place is like one of the restaurants back in Australia.
The interior of the restaurant was decorated with aboriginal paintings. These are also known as Australian Indigenous Art and is a significant resemblance of Australia.
Of course one cannot miss out the Australian flag in a Aussie restaurant.
There are a few set lunch options:
Set A (Lunch Time Only)
Main And Drink @Rm14.50 Nett
Add On Mushroom Soup Rm4.50
Set B (Lunch And Dinner)
Soup, Main, Drink And Dessert @ 24.50nett
The options of the main course include:
Main:-
- House Roast Chicken/ Gravy/ Potatoes/ Salad – The roast chicken drumstick was served with homemade gravy, slices of potato wedges and greens. It was then sprinkled with some mixed herbs.
The chicken drumstick was well marinated and grilled. Although some part of the thigh was slightly burnt, the overall taste of quarter chicken was just nice. The portion of the greens was enough to meet 1/3 of your daily vegetables intake and they were served fresh with vinegar dressing.
- Pork Schnitzel With Basil Mayonaise Potatoes And Salad – Slices of lean pork meat were battered and deep fried until perfection, then topped with homemade basil mayonnaise and served together with potatoes wedges and fresh greens.
The fragrance of Thai basil was detected on this dish as the mayonnaise was blended together using basil leaves. For those who don’t enjoy the smell of Thai basil leaves, this dish might not be a good suggestion. As for those that love the fragrance this is absolutely a great choice. Moreover, when the basil mayonnaise was mixed with the homemade brown sauce, it was a perfect match.
The rest of the main dishes are listed below:
- Chicken Au Gratin Potatoes And Salad
- Oz Hot-Dog, Potatoes
- Whole Australian Rainbow Trout (Flsh) With Lemon Butter Almond Flakes Potatoes, Salad (Add On Rm15.00)***
- Grilled Fish (Ddry) Italian (Tomatoes And Herbs, Potatoes, Salad)
- Spaghetti Bolognaise (Pork)
- Chicken And Mushroom Pot-Pie/Salad/Potatoes
- Aussie Style Roast Pork With Apple Sauce/Potatoes And Salad
- Fish Mornay(Cheese Sauce)/Potatoes/Salad
Drinks: – Fruit Punch/Michael Jackson/ Sea Coconut With Longans/ Soya Milk/Nutmeg With Lemon Drink
The taste of the Fruit Punch was very delightful and refreshing. It is great for quenching thirst especially on hot days.
Micheal Jackson – The mixture of glass jelly with soy milk. This is a very common drink in Asia. It gives you the protein (soy milk) and also some bite texture (glass jelly) as well.
There are options available for dessert for those who take the Set B:
Dessert Be The Day:- Cream Puff With Ice Cream Or Warm Chocolate
Moist Cake With Ice Cream Or Italian Panna Cotta
Overall, they serve healthy, balanced and delicious food. In fact, the price for the lunch is considered very reasonable at RM14.50 for a main and drink. However, the service here still has room for improvement as they lack of heat check with customers after their dining experience. Like my case the grilled chicken was slightly over burnt on the thigh part. Parking is not an issue as there are a lot of parking available at Elite Avenue.
