Authenticity and localization are always contradictory when setting up a foreign restaurant out of its original place. Sometimes the acceptance level of the dishes is different at different places. Therefore some restaurants chose to improvise its food to suit local taste buds. However, the real challenge is suit local taste buds and to maintain the authenticity with the ingredients from the origin place that might incure high cost of import of ingredients and educating the local to accept that authenticity taste.
Menya Miyabi, one of the ramen shop originated from Hokaido is insisting with precision about the authenticity taste from their origin. The master chef Seiya Takana will fly down from Hokaido every 3 months to perform an audit of the food served here to make sure it is at par of the requirement.
Expecting the high demand from the local, Menya Miyabi is expending another new branch which will be located at Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya.
Some of the recommended dishes are listed as below:
Hokkaido Chilled Ramen – RM19, 北海道の凉面. The ramen is cooked and crossover to cold water, after that it is mixed with balsamic sauce, sesame sauce, served with pork slices, cucumber, corns and soft boiled eggs.
Now only I know Hokkaido Chilled Ramen is different from the usual Japanese Cold Noodle. Although the taste is not usual, which I will classified as unique. The mixture of the sauce and ramen is sourish and appetizing, the aroma of the sesame sauce really make the ramen so tasty. This is the dish that I will come back for again.
Tonkatsu Ramen (Pork Broth Flavour) – 23.50, the pork broth is cooked for hours until the pork broth is thick and tasty. Serving with ramen, pork slices, black fungus, bamboo shoot and a slice of seaweed.
The thick and sweetness of the pork broth that cooked for hours really give the impact to this bowl of ramen, the saltiness and the sweetness is so balance up, which is very nice ramen.
Yaki-miso Ramen (Fried Soybean Paste Flavour) – RM23.50, similar to the tonkatsu ramen. Aside the pork broth, it is replaced with fried soybean paste as the soup base.
Comparing the pork broth base soup and fried soybean paste flavour base soup. I still love the pork broth base soup more as the fried soybean paste flavour base soup is on salty side.
Kara Miso Ramen (Hot & Spicy Miso Ramen) – RM24, similar to fried soybean paste flavour base soup, one thing that add on tho this dish is spicy.
The hot and spicy miso base ramen is very nice. This ramen is not too spicy although it is hot and spicy base soup.
Croquette – RM9, the croquette is containing mash potato, ground meat and covered with bread crumbed.
Nice croquette that need to be taken during hot, so the crunchiness and the warm mash potato is preserved.
Katsu Curry – RM24, the pork chop is batter and deep fried until golden perfection and it is served with the house mix Japanese curry.
The taste of the curry is pack with mix herbs aroma and not too spicy, my personal opinion if the dish is finishing with a touch of seaweed flakes or sesame will be perfect.
Gyoza – 6pcs – RM12, 10pcs – RM18, the home made gyoza with the one and only machine available in Penang.
If it was not told that the gyoza is fully made by machine, I still thought that it is a hand made one. However, the tenderness and the taste of the gyoza is great even it is made by machine.
Overall, the Hokaido Chill Ramen is one of the best that I have tried. This is the dish that I would be going back for. The price of the ramen here is reasonable with most of the ingredients are imported from Japan. The service here is also very friendly.
