Looking for a place for home cooked dishes is not easy. Most of the commercial restaurants will not have such “homey” feel. Usually this type of cooking is only available in small restaurant or home-style cafe.
There is this restaurant located in Pulau Tikus which is not very big and can only cater for less than 10 tables. All the dishes prepared carry the taste of home cooked meal.
An important requirement for a typical Chinese home style cooking is to have a bowl of long-boiled hot soup. I have tried 3 types of soup below:
- Watercress with Pork Ribs Soup – RM4.80
- Winter Melon with Pork Ribs Soup – RM4.80
- Lotus Root & Peanuts with Pork Ribs Soup – RM4.80
Watercress with Pork Ribs Soup – The taste of the watercress soup is similar to my mum’s cooking. The soup was boiled with pork ribs, watercress and red dates for long hours. The soup was naturally sweet from the red dates and filled with richness from the pork ribs and a refreshing taste from the watercress.
Lotus Root & Peanuts with Pork Ribs Soup – The lotus root and peanuts were also boiled with pork ribs with some dried squids. This is also one of my favorite soups.
Winter Melon with Pork Ribs Soup – Apart from winter melon and pork ribs, the soup was added with some wolf berries to bring a natural sweetness to the soup.
Fried Egg with Prawn – RM6.00, the fried egg was stuffed with some spring onions and shrimps. The is a simple type of household cooking. My mum and granny always cook this dish at home.
Steamed Lady’s Finger – RM6.50, this dish was appetizing and spicy. This dish is not meant for non-spicy lovers. It tasted spicy with a slight of saltiness which was very appetizing. I can finish the whole plate by myself.
Fried Mixed Vegetables – RM6.00, this dish was stir-fried with Chinese cabbage, black fungus, carrot, and green veggie. This is a very common mixed vegetable dish which is perfect for someone who really miss home cooked food.
Rice Wine Chicken – RM9.50, the chicken pieces was steamed with rice wine, black fungus and ginger. This type of dish is a typical confinement dish. When someone in the family is going through confinement, the rest of the family members will be very happy because they will have the chance to eat their favorite rice wine chicken.
Marmite Chicken – RM12.00, the chicken fillet pieces were battered and deep fried. Before served the chicken pieces were mixed with marmite sauce. This dish is dedicated for kids and non-spicy lovers. They were crispy on the outside with a hint of sweetness and tender on the inside.
Tomyam – RM20.00, the seafood tomyam contained fish filets, shrimps and squid slices. This tomyam tasted sourish and spicy which is perfect for tomyam lovers.
Dark Sauce Pork – RM12.00, the is the dish which my granny used to cook for me for my lunch. Again this is a very common household dish but yet packed with aromatic soy sauce and tender meat blocks.
Thai Basil Leaf Chicken – RM10.00, the chicken cubes were cooked in claypot, added with some dried chilis, onion slices and some Thai basil leaves.
Overall, this is the perfect place to look for delicious and affordable home cooked food. The food portion here is small with an average standard serving size of 2 to 3 pax. The soup portion is ideal for 1-2 pax per pot. If you ordered more dishes then it should be enough to fill up your tummy. A major drawback of this place is the very limited parking space in the area.
