Gudang is a Malay word which means warehouse or store. Therefore, I believe this is how Gudang Cafe got their name as the place was previously a warehouse which had then been converted to a contemporary cafe.
The location of the cafe is at Gat Lebuh Armenian, which is a very small lane and can be easily missed if not for the GPS.
This is not the first cafe in Penang which was converted from a warehouse. As expected, the interior of the cafe looked exactly like a warehouse which was spacious and rustic. However, with a few touch-ups here and there it now serves as one of the most popular cafe in that area for both local and tourists alike.
This is the 45-feet long table which looks like those tables in hostels for backpackers.
However, to me the long table is not the attraction. The taste and price of the food made this place attractive and worth a return visit.
Omu Ramen – RM7.80. Fried noddles, omelette. This Japanese infused ramen was stir-fried and wrapped with omelette or “Omu”. Serving together were some chicken cubes and veggie.
The ramen was fried with teriyaki sauce and packed with wok fragrance. This is one of the most affordable selection in the cafe. The taste was neither too spicy nor too salty. The taste was well-blended.
Chicken Katsu Don – RM12.80. This dish was served with rice, breaded deep-fried chicken and egg.
This is another affordable Japanese infused dish. The taste of this chicken katsu don is comparable to those in Japanese restaurants but only at half of the price. I love the crunchy skin while the chicken meat was tender and juicy. It was served with a bowl of miso soup as well.
Spicy Ramen – RM9.80, this ramen was served with teriyaki chicken, egg and veggie.
This looks like Penang Hokkien Mee but the taste is completely different as it does not use prawn broth. The soup of the spicy ramen was very spicy but packed with flavor. It was great to eat with teriyaki chicken slices. The soft boiled egg was perfectly done and it complimented the soup ramen very well.
Top up RM8 for Greentea latte/ cafe latte/ chocolate and Chocolate/ Vanilla Ice cream.
The taste of the coffee was so pleasant and refreshing.
Trying out this long table, it seems like sitting at the canteen table.
Overall, this taste of the food here was great and the price was very attractive. Nowadays, it is hard to get this price in cafes. The only drawback is that it will be much easier to call for Uber to this cafe as there are no many places for parking.
