Penang is always packed with delicious and nice food. You can find food in each and every corner of Penang Island. However, there are not many places in Penang that provide healthy vegetarian food.
One of the newest places to hunt for food is Spice Canopy. You can find a restaurant serving healthy vegetarian food and it is known as Fresh Moment. It is not hard to locate this restaurant as Spice Canopy is located just next to SPICE arena.
The slogan for Fresh Moment is Friendly, Healthy and Refreshing.
The small and cozy restaurant is a place to sit back and relax for some healthy and delightful meals.
Singapore Pai Tee – RM7.90, the carrot, mushroom and yam bean were sliced and stir fried, then served in a crispy battered cup and sided with chili sauce.
The combination of hot and crispy batter gave a great bite feel. The chili sauce also complemented the dish well.
Pineapple Bitter Gourd Pasta – RM13.90, The pasta was cooked in vegetable based soup which consisted of bitter gourd, capsicums, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and mushrooms.
My first impression by looking at this dish was plain and tasteless as it was cooked in vegetable broth. However, I was so wrong. The soup was flavourful and yet nutritious. The touch of pineapple made this dish very appetizing and zesty while the broth mixed so well with the pasta. It reminds me of macaroni soup that we had in Hong Kong, except this is a much healthier version.
Fresh Moment Spaghetti – RM13.80, the spaghetti was prepared with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and raisin.
Pasta with raisins is something new to me. Just like most of the carbonaras out there, the white and creamy sauce was rich and thick. This dish mixed well with the vegetables. This pasta tasted slightly on the sweet side, perhaps it was due to the raisins. If you prefer a less sweet version, you may always state your preference to the restaurant.
Nasi Lemak – RM11.80, the nasi lemak was served with vegetarian fish, vegetarian prawns, cucumber, spinach, anchovies, peanuts, papadum, sambal and topped with some raisins.
The healthiness level of this meal started right from the rice itself. Regular ones would be cooked in coconut milk, but at Fresh Moment the rice was cooked with coconut oil. The sambal (chili paste) tasted like the real sambal, except that it was prepared using vegetarian ingredients.
Aglio-Olio – RM13.80, the spaghetti was stir fried with capsicums, mushrooms, broccoli and sprinkled with mixed herbs and chili flakes.
The texture of the spaghetti was al dente and the mixed vegetables complemented the dish very well. The slight drawback of this dish was the saltiness was not evenly spread. It would definitely taste better if the salt was added to the pasta water instead of as a finishing for a well-balanced taste.
Hong Kong Porridge – RM11.00, the Cantonese style porridge was served with vegetarian fish and anchovies. A touch of sesame oil and coriander completed the taste of this porridge.
The taste of the vegetarian fish which was made from gluten was similar to eating the real anchovies. The anchovies gave the porridge some great crunchy texture.
Mexican Abalone Mushroom Meal – RM13.80, The abalone mushroom was battered and deep fried until golden perfection.
The abalone mushroom that was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside made a great combination. It tasted excellent when served with their homemade sweet and sourish sauce.
Volcano Fried Rice – RM14.80, the rice was pan fried with grained mushrooms and mushroom slices. It was then covered with an omelette, homemade sauce and sesame.
This dish is specially dedicated to kids. I love the aroma of the fried rice as the smell was packed with mushrooms wok fragrance.
Nyonya Rendang Mutton Meal – RM13.80, The thick flavoring curry was cooked with “mutton” which was made from gluten as well. Cooking together with it were some potatoes.
This dish tasted like the real mutton curry. The thick and spicy curry with “mutton” made this dish so tempting and delicious.
Some of the drinks that can be order at this restaurant:
- Lemon Grass Ginger (Hot) – RM3.80
- Passion Honey Lemon (Cold) – RM8.00
Overall, the food here is nice and the price for the food is average. The plus point for Fresh Moment is all the food served have not been added with MSG. The parking here is still FREE and aplenty at the moment.
