There are many cafes in Georgetown, Penang. Sometimes, it is good to explore into the small lanes of Georgetown and discover the “hidden” cafes which are out of sight from the main streets.
The cafe that I have discovered is ETE cafe. This cafe serves French patisseries and coffee. However, this cafe also specializes in serving several Taiwanese dishes for lunch as well.
A huge coffee roasting machine can be found in the cafe and this shows the owner is serious about good and quality coffee.
Most of the desserts and cakes are made in the house by the baker who is also a certified baker in French patisseries.
There are not much seating area in this cafe as this cafe is designed to serve a limited number of quality diners instead of big group of guests.
For those who are looking for lunch with coffee together, there are a few options that you can check out:
Taiwanese Beef Noodle – RM20 per bowl, RM25 per set (with coffee). The noodle was served with braised beef and topped with vegetable, pickles and spring onion.
The noodles are imported from Taiwan as the locally made noodles are made with lye water. The beef slices were braised in long hours until soft and tender. The taste of the soup was thick and tasty while the overall of the dish was so delicious.
Taiwanese Pork Noodle – RM16 per bowl, RM21 per set. The base of the soup was cooked with light soy sauce and pork broth, then served with pork slices and topped with spring onions.
The taste of the pork soup was lighter compared to the beef soup base which was more thick with a hint of spiciness. The pork based noodle is dedicated for kids or those who don’t take beef.
Taiwanese Pork Bun – RM9.90 per bun, RM14.90 per set, the pork belly slices were served with crushed peanuts, coriander and pickles.
The homemade soft bun blended very well with the soft and tender pork belly slices and tcrunchy chopped peanuts. Initially it looked like a normal pork bun but surprisingly it tasted very good.
This is the coffee that will be served if you ordered set meal.
Overall, the coffee and the taste of the food here were great. The place was compact and cozy. The drawbacks are the parking is very limited and the the lunch options are also limited. It is perfect for those seeking an authentic Taiwanese food such as the beef noodle and the pork bun. The price of the food is considered average.
