David Brown’s Restaurant, Penang Hill – Relax and Elegant Dinner

David Brown’s Restaurant is the highest landed restaurant in Penang. The restaurant is located at the top of Penang Hill. The original owner of this house is David Brown who was one of the successful businessmen during British time. Among others which were owned by David Brown are significant places like Brown Road and Padang Brown.

This place used to grow strawberries back in the 80’s, hence it is also known as “Strawberry Hill”. However, due to climate changes, it is no longer possible to grow strawberries on this hill. However, with technology advancement the current owner is able to start growing strawberries again.

Although the restoration of strawberry plantation is still in progress, the place is beautiful enough with a huge lily pond right in front of the restaurant filled with gorgeous lilies.

The setup of the dining table just in front of the lily pond with cooling air of the hill was just perfect. I used to come here for the afternoon tea as the scones are one of the best in Penang. Until now only I know that the dinner here is just as good.

There is also a fire place with chimney for those looking for some warmth when the weather is cold which I believe it was used way back in the 80’s.

Appetizer

Smoked duck breast, a mixture of fresh greens and smoked duck breast slices with honey lemon vinaigrette as the dressing. The dressing is a unique mixture of the lemonade and sun quick orange cordial while the peppery smoked duck is full of flavour. It is a great combination and a unique appetizer to start off the dinner.

Soup

The Seafood Corn Soup has a touch of lemon grass fragrance. The corn brings in the sweetness of the soup. The chef uses fish head as the soup base and adds is scallops and prawns. The soup is sweet and creamy. It is another unique yet appetizing soup.

Serving together with the soup are some fresh rolls. You may dip the rolls into the soup for extra flavouring. Otherwise you may eat it plain with butter which is equally good as the rolls are freshly baked.

Main Course

David Brown’s Grilled Chicken Chop with roasted baby potatoes, steamed vegetable & corn, and jumbo sausage. The chicken chop is very nice in terms of marination and grill. The sausage is slightly tendentious.

Or

Pan-seared Sushi-Grade Norwegian Salmon with potato cream, citrus salsa, pea sprout and aioli. The salmon is fresh but the texture is a bit dry.

Or

Pan seared grain-fed sirloin with roasted potato, onion marmalade, mixed green, balsamic reduction and au jus. The sauce is very nice and the tenderness of the meat is slight tough as it could be due to the beef was grain-fed.

Or

Braised lamb shortloin with potato cream, onion confit, steamed vegetable & corn. The sweetness and slightly sourish taste is due to the apple juice and balsamic vinegar. The tenderness of the lamb is a bit over-cooked.

Dessert

Chocolate Mousse Cake with pistachio tuile, vanilla ice cream, mixed berry compote and orea soil. The cake is chocolaty-rich and it is always good to have a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the richness of the cake.
