Hiding away from the hustle bustle of city, located off the main road in a very quiet and cozy neighbourhood, this is the location of Croisette Cafe. The place serves home style French cuisine. The chef Pierre-M Chaillou, is a famous French chef who is a very humble, low profile and down to earth person.
Croisette Cafe serves Set Lunch (Tue to Sunday) from 11.30 a.m – 2.30 p.m.
The price for Tues to Fri is RM30 nett, as for weekends & Public Holidays it is RM40 nett.
It is not difficult to get to this place. However, there is some direction required. If you are driving from town towards Tanjung Bungah via Jalan Tanjung Bungah, you will surely pass by Flamingo Hotel on your right. At the traffic light in front of the hotel turn right. Once turn right, turn left to Medan Tanjung Bungah. Keep driving for another 150 meters, you will see Tanjung Beach Condo on your right. At the corner you will see Sun Flower Cake House. Turn right and after a few houses away you will see Croisette Villa on your right.
The home style deco with Louis Armstrong’s classics playing in the background made this place cozy and relaxing. The place is able to cater about 30-40 pax.
Only the branch in Penang you will be able to get fresh daily-baked pastries and breads which includes sourdough bread and croissants.
These breads looked so fluffy and aromatic.
There was a selection of French wines next to the counter, much to the delight of French wine lovers.
Fresh Hot Croissant – RM3.80 / each. Homemade croissant, served hot and crispy.
Delicious and fresh croissants suitable for everyone, even kids would love them.
Set lunch with the choice as below:
Starter (choose one)
- Sardine in olive oil rile totes & lemon toasted bread
- Soup tomato & pistou
- Salad garden mimosa
- Soup French onion with croutons
- Soup pumpkin velouté
- Pork pate with toasted bread
We selected Pork pate with toasted bread – the pate was made of minced meat and pork liver. It was then baked in the oven. It is an authentic country style French delicacy and is one of their signatures here. It was served together with 2 slices of multi-grain wholemeal toasts.
The texture of the pork pate was just nice, the saltiness level was also not too over. It is best to be taken with the toasts. Although Pâté is a very common homemade food back at France, it is still very rare in Penang. As for me, I quite like the taste of this dish and it is a little bit like Asian luncheon meat but it consisted of higher quality ingredients.
Soup pumpkin velouté – The silky smooth starter was unlike the usual thick and creamy soup.
Croisette’s version was packed with pumpkin taste however the texture of the soup was not as thick and creamy as what we usually had elsewhere. It is different from the usual soup, the texture was diluted but still refreshing.
Main (choose one)
- Gnocchi Roquefort cream & Salad Mesclun
- Fish Dory Fillet, Steamed, Roast Pumpkin Cream
- Chicken Breast, pan fried, Roquefort cream
- Sandwich French Ham in Country style baguette
- Grilled Pork Chop with Dijon Mustard
- Pasta Pistou with Mesclun salad
Chicken Breast, pan fried, Roquefort cream – The pan fried chicken breast was served with Roquefort cream which is a blend of dried marjoram, thyme, summer savory, basil, rosemary, fennel seeds and blue cheese. Serving together the dish was some fresh salad and potato wedges.
The breast meat was still very juicy even after pan fried. However, the sauce which consisted of some blue cheese was slightly too strong for me. I would suggest the server to inform the diners before hand that the sauce would be strong as not all Asians are able to accept the strong scent of blue cheese. You could request for a different sauce if Roquefort cream is not your cup of tea.
Grilled Pork Chop with Dijon Mustard – grilled pork slice with a reasonable layer of fat. It was marinated with herbs and served with home made white cheese mustard sauce. It tasted very tender and mixed really well with the sauce.
The sauce had a very strong herb scent and it was very nice. The slice of pork chop was topped a piece of fragrant bay leaf. This was a very nice pork chop which I will be going back for this again.
Dessert (choose one):
- Cream Brûlée
- Mousse Trio Chocolate
- Cake Brownie a la Mode
- Cake Morello Cherry Clafoutis
- Peach Melba
Peach Melba – A dessert of peaches, raspberry sauce and chopped almond and strawberry with vanilla ice cream.
The overall feel of this dessert was cooling, refreshing and appetizing, The peach slice blended very well with the raspberry sauce and ice cream.
Cream Brûlée – A dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a contrasting layer of hard caramel. It was based with some orange zest and topped with a strawberry.
The Cream Brûlée tasted rich but the richness was well contrasted with jazzy orange zest.
Drink (choose one)
Brewed Coffee or Tea English Breakfast
Brewed Coffee – Completing the meal with a cup of brewed coffee which was packed with strong coffee aroma.
Overall, this is very cozy and homely villa in a suburban area. In Penang, it is very rare to find a good French cuisine in a home-style environment. But now, thanks to Croisette that Penangites are able to enjoy French cuisine at a relatively reasonable price. There are plenty of parking available along the road side. The price of the food would be slightly on the high side during weekends and public holidays.
