To search for the best food in certain area requires guidance and introduction from others either by searching the internet or by word of mouth. As a permanent resident of Penang, I regret to say that there are many good food in Georgetown which I still have yet to try out. One of the best steamed chicken porridge with soy sauce was introduced to me by a friend of mine recently.
The location of this stall is next to Kedai Kopi Cathay (Cathay Coffee Shop) in the junction of Jalan Tavoy/Jalan Burma. There is a van which usually parks next to the coffee shop with the signage of “Chicken Porridge”. This stall only operates during dinner time.
The stall has a long-run history. The first owner passed down the recipe to the next generation and it has been on-going for more than 30 years. The porridge and the steamed chicken has been enhanced and improved from time to time to give the best taste to their customers.
At this generation, Joanne is the lady owner who has the honor to co-own the stall which was passed down by the old man.
The owner of the stall is a very friendly and cheerful person. It will never been a boring night if you try to talk to him.
The price of chicken porridge:
- Small – RM3.50
- Big – RM4.50
The price of steamed chicken with soy sauce:
- RM8 / RM12 / RM18 / RM24
The option of the porridge can be either just plain porridge or chicken porridge blended with chicken stock.
A hot bowl of porridge with a few slices of “you tiao” and some lettuce gave a warm and delightful feeling.
The combination of the soy sauce steamed chicken and the porridge is a perfect match. The steamed chicken was very tender and juicy. With a few bites you can swallow the whole piece of chicken. The word to describe the feeling is “divine”.
Overall, this is one of the best porridge and soy sauce steamed chicken in Georgetown. Parking is not a problem after working hours. The only drawback is this coffee shop needs to upgrade a bit as it looks a little run down. I would definitely go back for the soy sauce steamed chicken. The price of the food is reasonable. I hope Joanne will keep up with the standard of the chicken while remaining the current price.
