Bayview Hotel, Penang – Exclusive Dining at The Price of Kopi Tiam

We always heard the remark “Good things are no cheap and cheap things are not good” and even for Cantonese “Where got such big female frog hop over the street”, meaning that there is no such combination of “cheap and good”.

However, I just realized from a friend there is a place which combines these two factors. An exclusive dining at a hotel with the whole set lunch costing less than RM10 per set. This place is Bayview Hotel which is located at the heart of town area next to Boon Siew Building.

The banner has been hanging in front of the hotel for sometime but still not many people realized of this promotion.

No doubt the title is “The Price of Kopi Tiam”, in actual fact the place that we are dining at the Bayview Hotel is also named as Kopi Tiam.

Although the name is Kopi Tiam, the ambience and the environment is not as Kopi Tiam. It is very classic and quiet.

There is a gigantic poster painting of Georgetown in old time hanging on the wall.

Interior deco with the hanging net.

The artificial orchid on each table for deco purpose.

The price for Set Lunch is RM9.90 not inclusive government tax and service charge.

The lunch set list as below:

Starter:

Soup of the day, which I was served creamy mushroom soup with croutons. The taste of the mushroom soup is kinda similar to Campbell brand mushroom soup. However, they added the soup with some fresh mushrooms and also they used chicken stock as the base which made it tasted slightly better. The crunchiness of the croutons has also add some flavour to the soup.

Main Meal:

After the starter the next on the list is the main meal, most of the main meals are the local delights. As for me I still feel like having western cuisine in such an exclusive environment will be more appropriate. The list of the main meals are as below:

  • Steam or Roasted Chicken Rice
  • Yong Chow Fried Rice Topped with Fried Egg
  • Nasi Lemak with Condiments
  • Char Koay Teow
  • Fried Mee Mamak
  • Hokkien Mee
  • Ayam Masak Merah with Cucumber Pickles & Nasi Tomato
  • Seafood Hor Fun
  • Fish and Chips
  • Chicken Chop

The chicken chop was very juicy and fresh and most importantly the portion was very big and worth the money. The gravy was the typical tomato chicken chop gravy but it was very tasty and delicious.

As for the fish and chip, the portion was also very big and the dory fish was fresh. The combination of the fish and the tartar sauce was perfect.

Dessert:

After a heavy meal, it’s the show time of dessert of the day. The dessert we had was vanilla ice cream with fruits. Although it was very simple but it was very cool and refreshing.

Coffee or Tea:

After the dessert, you have a choice of coffee or tea to clear off all the additional fat and calories. It complemented the set meal.

The SP here does not mean Sungai Petani, but instead is salt and paper on the picture below. Very nice.

Overall the food at Bayview Hotel is nice and acceptable. As for the price paid for such exclusive and divine ambience it is very worth the money. As for me I will be going back there for a few more rounds of lunch dining before they withdraw this offer, as they didn’t mentioned until when this offer will last.
