Areca Cafe, Georgetown – The Cozy Place To Hangout

Areca Hotel is located within the UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone and walking distance from the central
business district. It offers families and travellers the opportunity to experience the rich history and
vibrant culture that George Town and Penang has to offer.

Areca Café is a cafe inside Areca Hotel. The cafe provides a comfortable setting tailored towards families and hotel guests seeking a break from the rich and diverse street food culture that George Town has to offer.

The heritage with open-ceiling decor makes it a unique and relaxing place to visit and hang out.

For those who like to relax outdoor with a cuppa under the warm sunlight, this is the place to consider.

The outdoor seating is also a perfect place to have some sun and greenery view.

Otherwise, the indoor air-conditioned dining place will be comfortable for those who want to avoid the sun. The area has been decorated in  nostalgic yester-year concept that gives dinners a classic yet elegant feel.

Set Nasi Dulang Ayam Penyet – RM28nett. A set of rice served with ayam Penyet, sambal berlado, iman masin, telur masin, keropok, ulam campur, Tempe, tauhu, sago gula melaka with a cup of Bandung cincau syrup or coffee/teh tarik.

Nasi Dulang is the set of the month and it is an Indonesian dish. It is a very authentic dish which had all the flavors ranging from sweet to salty and raw to spicy.

Thai Beef Burger – RM28nett, Beef patty, cheese, fried egg, Thai lemon, aioli, pickled chili, french fries.

The doneness of the beef patty was medium and the texture was juicy. It was great when combined with Thai chili sauce.

Homemade Durian Ice Cream with Black Glutinous Rice – RM18nett

The taste of homemade durian ice cream was so thick and it tasted like the real durian fruit. Instead of serving with white glutinous rice, it was served with black glutinous rice. The decoration of flower petals made the dish look exquisite with a strong South East Asian influence.

Coffee, Vanilla Ice Cream, Amaretto & Biscotti – RM22nett

This was the first time I experienced an affogato being served in a bowl instead of a cup. Another uniqueness of this dessert was the serving of walnuts and parsley as topping. To make this dish more exciting, Amaretto (A sweet Italian liqueur that originated in Saronno, Italy) was also used to serve affogato.

Drinks:

  • Pineapple Fizz – RM14 (left)
  • Friut Punch – RM14 (right)

Overall, the place here was very nice and cozy. If you are looking for nice Asian food with a modern twist, this is the place to be. The taste and display of the food here were something different while the price was still reasonable in a hotel ambiance.
