Epic Journey to Hatyai, Day 1 Part 1 – Adventure on a Budget via Public Transport

Join us on an incredible journey from Penang Island to Hatyai, Thailand, as we explore the beauty of Southeast Asia on a budget! 🚍🌏

Our adventure begins with a scenic ferry ride from Penang Island to Butterworth, Malaysia, with a fare of just RM2. From there, we hop on the KTM Komuter towards Padang Besar, where the real adventure unfolds at a cost of RM11.40.

But here’s the twist! If you take the ferry from Penang Island, you’ll need to watch out for the train schedule, as there are only 2 trips a day from Padang Besar to Hatyai. Missing the train means you’ll embark on an alternate route, adding a bit more excitement to your journey.

Upon arrival at Padang Besar, we found ourselves facing a unique challenge. The only way to reach the Thailand border from the KTM station is either by GRAB or taxi. Our GRAB driver initially accepted our booking but canceled at the last minute, opting to drive a taxi instead, which forced us to pay RM10 per person instead of the usual RM5 for a GRAB car.

Crossing the border is an adventure in itself, with a van conveniently available just across the road for 60 baht per person. Once in Hatyai, we couldn’t resist trying out Tara Seafood, a famous spot known for its mouthwatering Thai Pork Leg Rice that’s an absolute must-try.

For accommodation, we chose SJ Miracle Hotel, a cozy and reasonably priced option just a 15-minute walk from Lee Garden, one of Hatyai’s popular destinations. And when it comes to food, you can’t leave Hatyai without visiting Run Khop Khun Noodle shop, where you’ll savor one of the best Tomyam noodles in town at a very reasonable price.
