Thai Boat Noodle, Summerton Bayan Indah – The Latest Trending Food

The trend of certain food always comes in waves. From German Cuisine to Japanese and Korean Cuisine. Also not to forget that doughnuts and bubble milk tea used to be among the very popular snacks. The latest trend in town which is spotted not only in Penang, but also in KL and many other states is no other than the Thai Boat Noodle.

So either you ride with the wave or you go against the wave. Since the wave is here let’s just have fun with it. It is not hard to locate Thai Boat Noodle. If you driving from town area towards Queensbay Mall via Tun Dr. Lim Chong Ewe highway, once you see Villa Emas Apartment on your left, turn into the junction on your left and you reach the roundabout. Keep left and you will see Summerton Condominium on your left. There you will see Thai Boat Noodle is located at one of the shoplots.

The place is not very big and it can only accommodate about 30-40 customers.

The concept of this restaurant follows the way the food is served on the boats of the floating market at Maekong Chao Praya (The Famous Thai River). The portion of the food is very small which is only 2 mouthfuls of noodles and some ingredients. However, in order to get your stomach full, you will need anything from 4 – 10 bowls, depending on your appetite.

  • Dry Koay Teow Kai (Chicken) – RM1.90
  • Dry Koay Teow Mu (Pork) – RM1.90
  • Dry Bee Hoon Kai (Chicken) – RM1.90
  • Dry Bee Hoon Mu (Pork) – RM1.90
  • Soup Koay Teow Kai (Chicken) – RM1.90

You can choose from:

1) Bee hoon or koay teow
2) Dry or soup
3) Pork or chicken

My advice is, try the soup version first before trying the dried version as the taste of the dried version was more flavoring. The taste of the soup was like the milder version of Chinese bak kut teh. It is also common to see that the standard order for one person is minimum 4 bowls and above.

For those looking for desserts they have the below:

  1. Taptim Grot – RM3.90
  2. Pumpkin Sago – RM3.90

Taptim Grot is a usual Thai dessert with slices of jack fruit mixed with water chestnut and added with red rose syrup and coconut milk. It was a delightful sweet ending. This is my favourite Thai dessert.

The Pumpkin Sago consisted of pumpkin paste mixed with sago and served with ice cubes. The taste was quite bland and nothing spectacular about this dessert.

The stacking of many bowls shows the love of the food here and if you managed to stack 50 bowls you are considered “Godlike”.

Overall, the concept of Thai Boat Noodle is very new and it is the new wave in town. The dish per bowl is still considered reasonable as it is only RM1.90. However, the portion is only 2 mouthfuls. The price is the same as another outlet in KL which is also serving per bowl at RM1.90, thus making the price in Penang slightly on the high side if judging by the spending power of people in KL vs Penang. In order for me to get full I need to order at least 5 bowls which will cost me about RM9.50. Personally, with this price I can have other decent and pleasant food. But, this might be a good option for tea. In short, this is a very new concept which I personally feel that it is good to try once but not always.
