When I was young, I remember looking for a vegetarian restaurant was a headache as there are not many in Penang. Nowadays, with more people getting more health conscious, it is so much easier to get vegetarian food. At Lily’s Vegetarian Kitchen, you will find an array of vegetarian food ranging from Nyonya, Oriental, Fusion to even Western to satisfy the most discerning palates.
It is easy to locate Lily’s Vegetarian Kitchen. If you are driving via Macalister Road and Menara Unmo is on your left, you will see Madras Lane on your left, turn into Madras Lane and keep driving for another 15 meters and you will see Lily’s Vegetarian Kitchen on your left.
There was nothing fancy about the ambience of the restaurant. The layout and surrounding of the restaurant was very quiet and simple.
Green Curry Rice – RM8.00, The green curry was cooked with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, black fungus, broccoli, long beans and prawn-alike made of flour. The set of green curry rice also came with 2 pieces of jelly, some slices of cucumber and some flavoured bean curd skin which tasted like duck meat.
The taste of the curry was very thick and filled with aroma. However, the spiciness level of the curry was extreme and I had difficulty in finishing the dish. For those who could stand extremely spicy food, this is recommended for you.
Bak Kut Teh – RM7.50, The bak kut teh was prepared in vegetable form although the name contains “bak” (meat). It was cooked with bean curd, bean curd skin, vegetable, mushrooms and flavoured flour.
It is diffcult to tell that this dish was prepared without any meat and only vegetarian ingredients were used. It can easily pass as a regular bak kut teh as it tasted similar to the non-vegetarian version.
Soy Milk – RM1.80. The homemade soy milk which was fresh and with less sugar. It was simply delightful and nutritious.
Coffee with Milk – RM1.80, this is the beverage that will wake me up. For those observing the “Nine Emperor God” festival, this is forbidden as milk is not allowed.
Overall, the food variety here was plentiful and the taste of the food was acceptable. However, the price of the food here was slightly on the high side. If only the price of the food could be reduced a bit, everything would be perfect.
