Azuma Japanese Restaurant, Queensbay Mall – Deliciously Authentic Japanese Food

There are many Japanese restaurants in Penang. The availability of Japanese cuisine in Penang are mostly just a few stones’ throw away. However, there are not many which serve nice and authentic Japanese food. One of the famous and notable Japanese restaurants is Azuma.

It is not hard to locate Azuma Japanese Restaurant. If you know how to go to Queensbay Mall in Bayan Lepas, Azuma is at Level 2, South Zone of Queensbay, just next to Harvey Norman.

During weekends, this place can get very crowded. To avoid queuing, it is best that you go before 12 noon or after 2pm.

For those who love to have the ready-made sushi, you can always choose the seats that are next to the kaitan belt where the sushi are just within reach by hand.

For those who just want to have sets or ala-carte, you may choose to sit comfortably at the normal dining area.

For those who wish to hold private events, you may request for the private rooms.

While waiting for your order to arrive, you can always fill your stomach with the sushi on the kaitan belt.

The price of the sushi depends on the color of the plate.

Salmon Sushi – RM3.80 per plate, there are 2 pieces of salmon sushi. The taste of the salmon was quite fresh and is relatively cheaper than its competitors.

Tamago Sushi – RM1.80 per plate, Tamago is made of layers of egg and Japanese call it as thousand-layered egg. The taste of Tamago was usual as with other sushi chains.

Inari Sushi – RM3.80 per plate. Inari is made of bean curd skin and the rice is covered inside the bean curd skin. The taste was also normal compared to the rest of other sushi chains. However, I find that the price of Inari here is higher compared to other restaurants.

Green Tea (Ocha) – RM1.00 per cup.

For individual orders like ala-carte, it can be chosen from the menu.

Unayanagawa Don – RM28 per set, a bowl of Japanese rice covered with fried egg, slices of onion, pan fried eel pieces dipped with Japanese sweet sauce, carrot slices, seaweed slices and chopped spring onion. Serving together with the rice is a bowl of hot miso soup.

The aroma of the pan fried egg together with the fragrance of Japanese rice made the perfect match. As for the eel slices, it mixed very well with the Japanese sweet sauce. I personally love this dish and would come back for this.

Tori Katsu Don – RM16, Japanese rice topped with deep fried chicken cutlets, egg, onion slices, seaweed slices and chopped spring onion. Serving together with this dish is also a bowl of hot miso soup.

The texture of the chicken cutlet was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The taste of the egg was similar as Unayanagawa Don, which tasted slightly sweet and pleasant. However, Unayanagawa Don is still my favourite.

Overall,  this place is family-friendly and very cozy. Based on the selected dishes above, the taste of the food here was delicious and unique. For the pricing it was also quite reasonable but only applicable to certain selections only. As with other popular restaurants, you will need to arrange a suitable time to dine-in to avoid long waiting queues.
