One thing that makes Penang so unique and different from other cities in the world is Penang owns many heritage buildings in the vicinity of Georgetown. That is why Penang has been listed on UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the buildings that was restored to its previous glory was Pavilion Coffee. This idea of converting the heritage building into a dining and lodging place was done by 2 partners. Jason Ng and Johnny Wu.
It is not hard to locate this place. For those who know how to go to Lebuh Presgrave from Lebuh Tun Dr. Lim Chong Ewe, you will see Kwang Wah Yit Po Press Office (光华日报) on your right and just opposite Kwang Wah Yit Po, you will see the sign in front of the door which was written in Mandarin “三禾轩”, and this is where you will find Pavilion Coffee.
As the entrance of the building, you will feel the coziness of this place.
The humble cafe places a coffee counter in front and some tables at the side for dining. The lodging rooms are located upstairs. The entire building was designed in classic Chinese layout.
You could find some cute and nice miniature wines displayed at a corner which can only be purchased in Taiwan.
The owner must be a collector of miniature wine as there was another set of collection displayed inside the cafe.
Rose Ice Tea – RM6.90, one of the best selling drinks here is the Rose Ice Tea. The tea was prepared in 3 layers. The bottom layer was rose syrup, whereas the middle layer was fresh milk and the top was oo long tea. It was then topped with milk foam and some orchid buds.
It is undisputed that this is their signature drink. The rose syrup neutralized the strong scent of oo long tea. At the same time, the syrup managed to bring out some slight sweetness which made the tea neither too bitter nor too sweet.
Cafe Latte – RM6.90, the cafe latte here tasted normal like any other places. You can always request the owner to do some coffee art on top of the coffee. Although he is still beginner, he has done a very good job on the latte art.
The taste of the cafe latte is no different than other places. The only difference is that the latte art which is unique.
Deep Fried Prawn Cake – RM3.90, the chinese name of this dish is called 太阳饼, which is known as ‘Sun Biscuit’.
The outer layer of wonton skin was very crispy and the inner part was a mixture of minced pork, prawn, celery and some sesame oil which was very juicy. This is a very common snack in Taiwan and is also one of my favorites here.
Golden Prosperity Toast – RM6.90, this dish is also known as 升棺发财 in Chinese. The bread was prepared like a french toast with a pocket opened in the middle to stuff in potatoes, carrot cubes, onion slices and some minced meat with gravy.
It is another common dish in Taiwan and the taste of the food was very nice. It was not too salty and the bite of it had a mixture of crispy and starchy feeling.
Overall, the place here was very cozy and the food here were mostly Taiwanese style. For those who were looking for a place to relax and chill after the whole day under the hot sun, this is the place to be. The only drawback about this place is difficulty to find a parking during day time.
